  • Landmark date! Australia’s first $2 coin!
  • Struck to Proof quality from sterling silver!
  • Official issue of the Royal Australian Mint.
  • Official Australian legal tender issue.
  • Measures 20.50mm in diameter.
  • Set in the original, official case of issue.

An outstanding opportunity to secure Australia’s first $2 date struck to the finest possible standard from precious metal, we are delighted to present the Australia Indigenous Elder 1988 $2 Silver Proof Coin!

Like its lower denomination $1 counterpart, the $2 note fell victim to inflation, as well as the greater durability and cost-effectiveness of a coin. The last $2 note was issued in 1988, with the first $2 coin struck in the same year. Recognising Australia’s indigenous heritage, and depicting an aboriginal elder beneath the Southern Cross, the first Aluminium-Bronze $2 was struck by the Royal Australian Mint in 1988 – the year that marked the bicentenary of European Settlement.

To celebrate this landmark in Australian currency history, the Royal Australian Mint also issued a special edition commemorative 1988 $2 coin. Uniting Horst Hahne’s much-admired Indigenous elder motif with the Maklouf portrait of Elizabeth II, the nation’s first $2 coin looks absolutely magnificent when crafted to Proof quality from sterling silver.

A must-have for every Australian collector, we have a limited number of this classic Royal Australian Mint commemorative in stock. Click add to cart now!
