A superb work of numismatic art, and a unique, one-year-only commemorative type, we are delighted to present the Bicentenary 1988 50c Silver Proof Coin!
Australia’s sixth decimal commemorative type, struck by the Royal Australian Mint, the Bicentenary 1988 50c Silver Proof was issued to commemorate Australia’s bicentenary, and the arrival of the First Fleet. Led by Arthur Phillip, and comprising eleven ships carrying nearly 1,500 convicts, soldiers and crew, the First Fleet aimed to establish the first European colony in Australia. The fleet arrived from the 18th to the 20th of January 1788, with Phillip claiming ‘New South Wales’ on behalf of Great Britain and King George III on the 26th of January.
Although the coin does not depict a particular ship of the First Fleet, the reverse design by Michael Treacy is a powerfully symbolic representation of this landmark event in Australian history. It is a glorious work of numismatic design – evidenced by the fact that the coin won the Best International Trade Coin for 1988 in a competition encompassing 142 mints from around the globe. Official Australian legal tender, each coin is distinguished by the Raphael Maklouf portrait of Elizabeth II.
A crucial Australian decimal coin date, there’s no question that the 1988 Bicentenary 50c is especially sought after when struck to the finest of Proof quality from precious sterling silver. A sparkling addition to any collection, secure your coin now!
