An official tribute to the 25th anniversary of decimal currency, the 1991 Mint Set comprises eight Australian legal tender coins. Struck to the rigorous Uncirculated standard of the Royal Australian Mint – a much higher standard than that employed to strike the coins destined for circulation – the set was headlined by a unique, one-year-only 50c commemorative.
Celebrating the transition to decimal currency in 1966, the reverse of the 50c carries the classic Ram’s Head design. Arguably the most iconic predecimal motif, along with the Bounding Roo, the Ram’s Head design depicted the Champion of the 1932 Sydney Sheep Show. The design was created by artist and graphic designer Douglas Annand, and adapted for coinage by George Kruger Gray.
In addition to the 50c, the 1991 Mint Set was also highlighted by the last 1c & 2c dates before the denominations were withdrawn from circulation! Marking the end of an era, the ‘final issue’ 1991 1c & 2c are a must-have for every collection. Importantly, these coins struck to Uncirculated standard can only be found in the 1991 Mint Set! They were not issued for circulation! And neither were the 1991 20c, $1 & $2 coins! They will never be found in your change!
