The United Nations declared 1999 the International Year of Older Persons, citing the recognition of humanity’s demographic coming of age. It was hoped the aging population would lead maturing attitudes and capabilities in social, economic, cultural and spiritual undertakings. The year emphasised the importance of vitality, diversity and interdependence. To celebrate the year, the Royal Australian Mint struck a special commemorative $1 coin, with the reverse featuring the official logo of the year.
This 1999 6-Coin Mint Set comprises one example of each of the Australian legal tender decimal coins minted in 1999, including the ‘International Year of Older Persons $1. For the first time ever, the obverse of the coins in the set featured the new effigy of Her Majesty by Ian-Rank Broadley. The new portrait perfectly reflected the natural passage of time in the mature features of the long reigning monarch. This was the first occasion the effigy had appeared on coins in the Royal Australian Mint’s collector sets.
