Not issued for circulation, this limited edition Australian legal tender 50c from the Royal Australian Mint pays homage to Australia’s pioneering Afghan Cameleers!
In 1859, the Victorian Expedition Committee commissioned the procurement of 24 camels and three cameleers to be brought to Australia from India. In doing so, the Committee acknowledged that camels were far more suited for transport and exploration than horses or bullocks, and were ideally suited to the harsh conditions of inland Australia. The Muslim cameleers that arrived in Australia were collectively known as ‘Afghans’, but they came from a variety of locations, including modern India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Turkey. To exemplify the importance of these Aussie pioneers, half the Australian population relied on Afghan cameleers for survival at one stage during the 19th century.
Forming a fine tribute to the Afghan cameleers and their sturdy ‘ships of the desert’, this unique, one-year-only type is a must-have for anyone with an interest in Australia’s richly diverse but often unknown history. An official issue of the Royal Australian Mint, it’s even more vital to collectors.
Why? Because this official Australian legal tender issue was not issued for circulation and will never be found in change! A must-have for a complete collection!
