A small dolphin inhabiting Antarctic and sub-Antarctic waters, the species of Lagenorhynchus cruciger (hourglass dolphin) was identified in 1824. Remarkably, this dolphin is believed to be the sole cetacean identified as a species due only to eyewitness accounts. On the rare occasions it is seen, the dolphin is instantly recognisable due to its markings, which resemble an hourglass.
