The Little Hero Gold Nugget was discovered in 1890 by a party of prospectors at Shaw Falls near Marble Bar in Western Australia. Located in the State’s arid north-west, Marble Bar was established as a result of the Gold Rush to the Pilbara region in the early 1890s, and was gazetted in 1893. Weighing in at a massive 333 ounces, the Little Hero Nugget was exhibited at the Union Bank office in Perth, where it naturally triggered great public interest – particularly among those with dreams of striking it rich on the Western Australian goldfields!
Nearly a century later, in 1986, the Perth Mint issued the first coins in its Gold Nugget Coin Series. The first legal tender gold coins issued by the Perth Mint since the last Australian sovereign weas struck in 1931, this series included a tribute to the Little Hero Gold Nugget designed by numismatic master craftsman Stuart Devlin – the man who designed Australia’s original decimal coins. Struck from 1/10oz of 99.99% pure gold and selectively-plated in 22-carat rose gold, this new Australian legal tender tribute to the Little Hero bears a motif based on Devlin’s original design!
