Notable for its remarkable similarity to the classic bird of prey, the Golden Eagle was found in January 1931 approximately 630km east of Perth, Western Australia, by 17-year-old Jim Larcombe, the son of prospector James Larcombe. The largest confirmed gold find in Australia during the 20th century, this mighty nugget weighed in at a whopping 1,136 ounces!
In 1986, the Perth Mint issued the first coins in its Gold Nugget Coin Series, including a tribute to the Golden Eagle designed by numismatic master craftsman Stuart Devlin – the man who designed Australia’s original decimal coins.
