The Proclamation of 1800…
As a result of ongoing tumult in Europe, it proved difficult for Britain to supply any significant amount of coinage to early colonial Australia. Rum emerged as the primary medium of exchange, along with often worthless promissory notes, and a wild mix of foreign currency. Coins from such places as far-flung as Britain, India, Portugal, the Netherlands and Spain all found their way to Britain’s new southern outpost, but it was but impossible to determine their relative worth. In a bid to fix the problem, Governor Philip Gidley King issued the Proclamation of 1800, assigning fixed values to the main coins then in use.

Also known as a ‘Piece of 8’, the coin naturally made its way to Britain’s new colony, and was listed in Governor King’s Proclamation of 1800 at a value of five shillings.
