By the 1980s, an extensive review of the nation’s currency was underway. Due to issues of durability and cost-effectiveness, the $1 and $2 banknotes were replaced with coinage in 1984 and 1988 respectively. Ultimately, the paper $5 note was replaced with a polymer version, but in the 1980s, there was much speculation that the $5 note would follow the path of its lower denomination counterparts and be replaced with a coin. This theory was given weight when, in 1988, the Royal Australian Mint struck the nation’s first $5 coin.
The Australia $5 Last Note & First Coin Uncirculated Pack forms a lasting record of this tumultuous time in our currency history. The end of an era, the pack is highlighted by the last $5 paper note – issued from 1991 and bearing the facsimile signatures of Bernie Fraser, Governor of the Reserve Bank of Australia, and Secretary to the Treasury, Tony Cole.
