An astonishingly affordable opportunity to hold the history of one of the world’s greatest empires in your hands, we are proud to present Ancient Parthian 1st Century BC-2nd Century AD Silver Drachms!
The Parthian Empire was the key political force in Iran from the 3rd century BC to the 3rd century AD. A hub for trade and commerce, with the empire on the Silk Road from the Roman Empire in the Mediterranean to the Han Dynasty of China, Parthia was also a fierce military power. Indeed, Parthia proved a worthy foe of both the Roman Republic and its successor, the Roman Empire.
Although Roman forces won many battles, and captured the Parthian capital Ctesiphon on three separate occasions – during the reigns of the emperors Trajan, Marcus Aurelius and Septimius Severus respectively – permanent conquest of Parthia was never likely. The constant warfare between Roman and Parthian forces did weaken the Parthian Empire, however, in part leading to the internal conflict that would spell the empire’s doom. With the authority of the monarchy increasingly undermined, the ruler of Persis, Ardashir, rose in rebellion. When Ardashir’s forces won the Battle of Hormozdgan in 224AD against the last Parthian king, Artabanus IV, the Parthian Empire fell and was ultimately replaced by the Sasanian Empire.
Genuine artefacts of this deeply fascinating period of Ancient history, we have a small selection of Parthian Silver Drachms in stock. Struck by hand from the 1st century BC to the 2nd century AD – monarchs & types of our choice – the coins available grade from Very Good to Fine, with some oxidisation and minor deposits.
