Known by no more than 900 examples, the 1922/21 Overdate Threepence is a rarity of the highest order. A key to the entire 1910-64 Australian Commonwealth Series, it is seldom offered – regardless of the grade. A landmark opportunity, this is your chance to secure one of Australia’s most desirable coins.

The birth of the 1922/21 Overdate Threepence

One of few overdate types struck in Australia, there is much debate as to why the Melbourne Mint modified one of its 1921 working dies for use in 1922. Records show that two 1922 Threepence master punches arrived from the Royal Mint in January 1922, seemingly making it unnecessary for the Melbourne Mint to re-work old tools.

It is also known, however, that the Mint held four 1921 Threepence reverse dies in early 1922. Thus, either in a bid to extend the lifetime of a perfectly good, but obsolete die – possibly forced to act due to the weight of orders from the Commonwealth sparked by the burgeoning Roaring 20s economy – one of the 1921 dies had a ‘2’ punched into the date. The 1922/21 Overdate Threepence was born.

A great Australian rarity…

While its creation may be the subject of controversy, there’s no argument about the significance of this Overdate type – or its rarity. Known by no more than 900 examples, this coin is a rarity of the highest order.

Although the 1922/21 Overdate Threepence is usually found in poor grade, with a shallow strike and high circulation rendering most well worn, this coin demonstrates that where extreme rarity is apparent the grade is irrelevant in terms of demand. Highly sought after regardless of the condition, this great Australian rarity always sparks fierce competition.
