Downies is proud to present one of Australia’s rarest issued decimal coin types – the iconic 1966 Wavy ‘2’ 20c!
As you can imagine, Australia required a massive number of coins to facilitate the smooth, seamless transition to decimal currency in 1966. Thus, Australia sought the assistance of Britain, and the Royal Mint in London. The Royal Mint struck 30 million coins for each of the 5c, 10c & 20c denominations, and among the 30 million 20c coins would ultimately be found the 1966 Wavy ‘2’ 20c type.
An obvious variation from the standard 20c, the Wavy ‘2’ 20c is distinguished by the upward curve on the top of the baseline in the ‘2’. This is likely to have resulted from a simple and slight variation in the production of some of the dies. With most 1966 Wavy ‘2’ 20c coins suffering extensive circulation, this key Variety is scarce in any grade, and rare in superior grade.
A wonderful opportunity for any collector, and a must-have for Varieties enthusiast, we have the 1966 Wavy ‘2’ 20c coin available in Extremely Fine – very scarce as such. Click add to cart!
