Symbolising the identity and unity of Torres Strait Islander people, the Torres Strait Islander Flag was designed by Bernard Namok. A richly symbolic motif, the flag unites green panels representing the land with a blue panel representing the Torres Strait. Upon the blue panel is a white 5-pointed star representing the five major island groups, surrounded by a depiction of a dhari – a traditional Torres Strait Islander headdress. The black stripes separating the blue and green panels symbolise the people of the Torres Strait Islands.
Eye-catching and affordable, this official Australian legal tender issue marks 30 years since Governor-General Bill Hayden officially proclaimed the Torres Strait Islander Flag as an official Australian Flag in July 1995. Bearing a striking full-colour depiction of the flag, the reverse also carries the C Mintmark (Canberra), with the obverse featuring Daniel Thorne’s portrait of King Charles III. Struck to Uncirculated standard, and set within an official Royal Australian Mint pack, the limited edition has been set at 100,000.
