Created by Bernard Namok, the Torres Strait Islander Flag unites green panels representing the land with a blue panel representing the waters of the Torres Strait. Representing the five major island groups, the 5-pointed star is surrounded by a depiction of a dhari – a headdress worn by Torres Strait Islander men in ceremonial dances – with the black stripes symbolising the people of the Torres Strait Islands.
Recognised by ATSIC in 1992, the Torres Strait Islander Flag was granted official status as an Australian flag by Governor-General Bill Hayden under the Commonwealth 1953 Flags Act on the 14th of July 1995.
