Capturing the essence of the Australian landscape through her evocative and highly descriptive poetry, Dorothea Mackellar (1885-1968) is one of Australia’s most iconic poets. Tapping into the collective soul of the nation, her poetry still resonates today, with My Country – including the classic lines “I love a sunburnt country, A land of sweeping plains” – being the most famous.
Enshrining the lyrical beauty of Mackellar’s work in official Australian legal tender, the three coins found in this set celebrate her poems My Country, The Colours of Light, and Dawn respectively. Among the most beautifully designed coins ever issued by the RAM, each is an exquisite work of numismatic art.
