Struck by the Royal Australian Mint to mark 100 years since the six colonies united as a single nation in January 1901, the 2001 Federation series is a cornerstone of modern Australian numismatics. Issued for one year only, the program comprises nineteen circulating coin designs — a Coat of Arms 50c, plus individual State and Territory designs across the 20c and 50c denominations.

The 50c series consists of ten coins: one Coat of Arms issue and nine State & Territory designs. While the Coat of Arms coin had a higher mintage, the nine State and Territory 50c coins are among the lowest-mintage circulating 50c issues in Australian history, ranging from just 2 million to 3 million — dramatically lower than the long-term annual average of approximately 18.5 million.

The 20c series comprises nine State and Territory designs, each also struck in remarkably small numbers. With an average mintage of just 2.42 million — against a historical annual average of approximately 37.5 million — these coins were quickly hoarded from circulation and are now seldom encountered in any condition.
