Struck by the Royal Australian Mint for the 100th anniversary of the foundation of the Australian nation in 1901, the 2001 Federation 20c Series comprises nine coins – one for each of the country's nine States & Territories. One-year-only Australian legal tender types, these coins were issued in tiny numbers. Indeed, given that the annual average 20c mintage since 1966 is approximately 37.5 million, the average mintage of the nine coins is amazingly low at a mere 2.42 million. Remarkably, the smallest mintage is 2.1 million and even the largest is just 3.2 million!
Hoarded out of circulation, as with all Australian commemoratives, the tiny mintages have guaranteed that this series is all but impossible to piece together from change.
