Struck to rigorous Uncirculated standard, the Fred Hollows 2010 $1 Aluminium-Bronze Uncirculated Coin was the second issue in the RAMโs Inspirational Australians Series โ and what a truly inspirational figure Fred was! A skilled ophthalmologist, Fred migrated from New Zealand in 1965, and immediately made an impact on improving health services for First Nations Australians.
Dedicated his life to ending avoidable blindness, and determined to help those least able to help themselves, Fred expanded his work into developing countries, performing cataract surgery using an implanted intraocular lens โ as depicted on the coin before you. Even more crucially, he shared his knowledge and expertise, teaching local technicians how to perform key procedures. Fred sadly passed away in 1993, but his legacy lives on in The Fred Hollows Foundation โ now operating in 25 countries, and having restored the sight of millions of people around the world.
