The Proclamation of 1800…
Britain struggled to supply any substantial amount of coinage to early colonial Australia, largely due to the tumultuous political situation in Europe. Rum was the colony’s primary medium of exchange, along with promissory notes and a wild mix of foreign currency. Coins from Britain, India, Portugal, the Netherlands and Spain were all used in Britain’s new southern outpost, the only problem being that it was all but impossible to determine their relative worth. Attempting to solve the problem, Governor Philip Gidley King issued the Proclamation of 1800, allotting fixed values to the main coins in use.
