The Royal Australian Mint’s circulating full-colour $2 coins form the hottest series in Australian numismatics. Commanding the attention of collector and non-collector alike, every coin in the series is hoarded out of circulation at speed. Sure to be just as hotly pursued as its predecessors, this one-year-only type pays homage to the 30th anniversary of the Torres Strait Islander Flag. Symbolising the identity and unity of Torres Strait Islander people, and their deep connection to the land and the sea, this iconic emblem was officially proclaimed a flag of Australia in 1995.
Many will be hunting for this unique $2 type, but, underpinned by some of the lowest mintages in the decimal series, it is always tough to find colour $2 commemoratives in change. Even if you’re lucky, and find one, it will not be in top grade. A vital opportunity, this is your chance to guarantee you own the Torres Strait Islander Flag 2025 $2 coin in strictly Uncirculated quality! The Torres Strait Islander Flag…
A distinctive, official Australian Flag, the Torres Strait Islander Flag was created by Bernard Namok in 1992, with his design being selected after a competition held by the Island Coordinating Council.
A richly symbolic motif, Namok’s design features green panels representing the land, set either side of a central blue panel representing the waters of the Torres Strait. In the heart of the blue panel is found a white 5-pointed star, representing the five major island groups, surrounded by a depiction of a dhari – a traditional headdress worn by Torres Strait Islander men in ceremonial dances. The thin black stripes separating the blue and green panels symbolise the people of the Torres Strait Islands.
Recognised by ATSIC (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission) in 1992, the Torres Strait Islander Flag was granted official status as an Australian flag by Governor-General Bill Hayden under the Commonwealth 1953 Flags Act on the 14th of July 1995. The Royal Australian Mint’s 2025 Torres Strait Islander Flag $2 forms an outstanding tribute to the 30th anniversary of a major milestone in Australian history.
