Struck to Proof quality from 99.9% pure silver, this official Royal Australian Mint release marks the 50th anniversary of the 1966 Wave Hill Walk Off, and the 60th anniversary of the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976.
After decades of exploitation, approximately 200 Gurindji stockmen, domestic staff and their families walked off the Wave Hill cattle station in the Northern Territory in August 1966 to protest poor pay and living conditions. Led by Vincent Lingiari, the battle gained national prominence, evolving from a labour dispute into a landmark campaign for Indigenous land rights.
The campaign ultimately inspired one of the most iconic moments in the process of reconciliation – the pouring of soil by Prime Minister Gough Whitlam into the hand of Vincent Lingiari, symbolising the return of Gurindji land to the Gurindji people. The courage, unity and leadership of Vincent Lingiari and the Gurindji people reshaped Australia’s perception of equality and justice, and their battle also proved the catalyst for the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976 – the first legislation to recognise Aboriginal land ownership.
A deeply poignant commemorative, this 99.9% silver bears a stylised depiction of the Wave Hill Walk Off, united with a portrayal of the iconic handover between Gough Whitlam and Vincent Lingiari. An official Australian legal tender issue, the portrait of King Charles III is found upon the obverse. Beautifully presented within an official RAM case, complete with a Certificate of Authenticity, the mintage of this important coin is a mere 6,500.
