Representing a major landmark in Australia’s currency history, the 1970 Captain Cook 50c was the nation’s very first decimal commemorative coin type. Struck by the Royal Australian Mint to pay homage to the 200th anniversary of James Cook’s charting of the east coast of Australia, we have this one-year-only type in Specimen quality!

An official Australian legal tender issue, the 1970 Captain Cook 50c carried a portrait of the famous explorer based on a painting by John Webber, who accompanied Cook on his third Pacific voyage. Designed by legendary Australian numismatic master craftsman Stuart Devlin, the 1970 Captain Cook 50c is thought to be the world’s first coin type to carry a facsimile signature as part of the design. Upon the obverse is found the original decimal portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Arnold Machin.

Struck to impeccable Specimen quality – a much higher standard than that used to strike the coins issued into general circulation – this landmark Australian decimal coin is presented within the original, official red acrylic pack of issue. Click add to cart!
