Although millions of sovereigns were struck for the British Empire at the Royal Mint and its branches in Australia, Canada, India and South Africa, this iconic gold coin is still scarce to rare across the grades today. This is in large part due to the vast number destroyed for the value of the gold, officially withdrawn from circulation and restruck into new coins, or simply lost to the mists of time. It is the general scarcity of the sovereign – particularly the low-mintage pre-Victorian early dates – that makes assembling a collection such as this so difficult.
Nine monarchs – nine sovereigns!
Beginning with the rare first sovereign date, issued in 1817 under King George III (1760-1820), the collection includes coins of King George IV (1820-30), King William IV (1830-37), Queen Victoria (1837-1901), King Edward VII (1901-10), King George V (1910-36), Queen Elizabeth II (1952-2022) and King Charles (2022-present) – dates, mints and types of our choice.
Completing this comprehensive set, we have also secured a truly great, highly sought after British rarity – the only sovereign of King George VI (1937-52). Struck in Proof quality to celebrate the coronation of the king, the 1937 Gold Sovereign was the ONLY sovereign date of the king’s reign!
