Also known as ‘Leaden Hearts’, Convict Love Tokens provide a powerful bond with those who suffered at the hands of the harsh British legal system in the 18th & 19th centuries. Made for many British and Irish convicts whilst awaiting transportation to Australia, thousands of miles away from their families and friends, Convict Love Tokens were largely created from English coins. Smoothed flat and inscribed with a message, illustration or popular phrase of the day, tokens were then left with loved ones as a keepsake.
The Convict Love Token before you is a splendid example of this rare and fascinating field. Created from a King George III 1797 Cartwheel Penny, this impressive piece carries the classic Convict Love Token phrase ‘Forget Me Not’ beautifully engraved on one side, with floral sprays between the lines.
