Beginning with a 1965 novel penned by Frank Herbert – often noted as the best-selling sci-fi novel of all time – Dune has expanded into one of the great sci-fi franchises. Set more than 20,000 years into the future, Dune centres around the invaluable substance melange (known as ‘the spice’), and control of its production on the planet Arrakis. Known to the local inhabitants as ‘Dune’, Arrakis is the sole source of melange, where deposits of the drug are guarded by giant sandworms.
An award-winner, Herbert’s novel was followed by several sequels – and prequels – as well as inspiring a film (1984), a mini-series, video games and more. A 3-part movie series was launched in 2021, with first and second instalments garnering eight Academy Awards, and the third instalment to be released in 2026. Dune has millions of followers around the world – and they will all want this coin!
