Ranking as one of the most successful sci-fi franchises, Dune began with Frank Herbert’s award-winning 1965 novel – often said to be the best-selling sci-fi novel of all time. Set more than 20,000 years into the future, Dune centres around the sought after, immensely important substance melange (called ‘the spice’), and control of its production on the planet Arrakis. Known colloquially as ‘Dune’, the desert planet of Arrakis is the exclusive source of melange, where deposits of the substance are guarded by giant sandworms.
Frank Herbert’s novel was followed by several sequels – and prequels – and ultimately inspired a film (1984), a mini-series, video games and more. In 2021, the first of a 3-part movie series was launched, followed by a second instalment in 2024. The two films garnered eight Academy Awards between them, and sci-fi fans worldwide are eagerly anticipating the third and final instalment, to be released in December 2026. Naturally enough, Dune has a legion of fans worldwide – and they will all want this official tribute!

The obverse carries the Perth Mint's London Bullion Market Association registered mark, united with the weight and purity.
