One of the world’s most famous coin types, naturally associated with the Golden Age of Piracy, shipwrecks and buried treasure, we are delighted to present the 18th century Spanish-American Silver 8 Reales – also known as a Pieces of Eight!

A Spanish coin of huge importance, the Silver 8 Reales was the world’s most trusted international trade coin in the 17th and 18th centuries. Accepted worldwide, the Silver 8 Reales played a key role in Australian history. Indeed, the importance of the coin to the nation’s numismatic heritage can barely be overstated.

As the Silver 8 Reales circulated across the globe, it naturally found its way to Britain’s southern colonial outpost. Starved of currency, the influx of the 8 Reales was vital to the survival of the economy, with its status recognised by inclusion in Governor Philip Gidley King’s Proclamation of 1800. In regulating the values of foreign coins circulating in the years after settlement, King’s Proclamation created Australia’s first currency system, and the 8 Reales was the leading coin of this landmark enactment.
