Roaring 20s rarity!
One of the rarest, most sought after coins in the 1855-1931 Australian Sovereign Series, we are delighted to give you the chance to secure a spectacular example of the Melbourne Mint’s famed King George V 1922M Gold Sovereign!
The mintage of the 1922M Gold Sovereign was very low, having been closed by the historic Melbourne Mint at 608,306. As with so many Roaring 20s sovereigns, however, the mintage is largely irrelevant in determining rarity. The First World War sounded the death knell for gold as a circulating medium, and, transformed from everyday currency to international trading commodity, millions of sovereigns were used to satisfy Australia’s enormous war debt.
As with most 1920s sovereigns, it is reasonable to assume that a vast majority of the mintage of the 1922M Sovereign was dispatched overseas, with very few coins, if any, remaining on Australian shores. Today, the 1922M Sovereign is rightly regarded as a great Australian rarity, and is missing from most collections, regardless of the grade.
A mouthwatering opportunity to dine at the head table of numismatics, the coin before you is one of the finest examples of the 1922M Gold Sovereign ever offered by Downies. Seldom seen in such a sensational state of preservation, this 103-year-old gold coin has been graded by leading independent 3rd party coin verifiers Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) at MS63 – the equivalent of Choice Uncirculated condition.
Naturally enough, we have just one example of this important Australian rarity available. Become one of a select band of collectors to own the 1922M Gold Sovereign in the upper echelons of quality – click add to cart now!
