A masterpiece of 19th century medallic art, drawing together two of the most famous works of portraiture in numismatic history, we are proud to present the Queen Victoria 1897 Diamond Jubilee Bronze Medal.
Acceding the British throne in June of 1837, succeeding her uncle, King William IV, Queen Victoria reigned until January 1901. Stretching for an incredible 63 years and 216 days, her reign was the longest of any British monarch. In June of 1897, Queen Victoria became the first British monarch to celebrate a Diamond Jubilee. The event was attended by many members of the Royal Family, colonial Prime Ministers, royalty from around the globe and many foreign ambassadors, but the outpouring of joy from the general populace was perhaps more notable. Hundreds of thousands of people lined the streets as Queen Victoria took part in a parade throughout London, beacons were lit, and street parties were held, as people across Britain – and, indeed, across the Empire – paid homage to the record-breaking monarch.
Struck by the Royal Mint London, the Queen Victoria 1897 Diamond Jubilee Bronze Medal forms a permanent memorial of this major milestone in British history. Crafted from well over 70 grams of bronze, and spanning a whopping 55mm, this collectable colossus was designed and engraved by master craftsman William de Saulles. Capturing the essence of Queen Victoria’s reign, and her transition from ‘teenage queen’ to ‘Grandmother of Europe’, the medal unites her first and last coinage portraits. Designed by William Wyon, the Young Head portrait of Queen Victoria adorns the reverse, with the distinguished Veiled Head effigy by Sir Thomas Brock found upon the obverse.
