An official issue of Britain’s Royal Mint, this one-year-only £2 coin pays homage to the 200th anniversary of the first voyage of the British ship, HMS Beagle.
Launched in 1820, and taking part in the coronation celebrations of King George IV, the Beagle undertook its first voyage under Captain Pringle Stokes in 1826 – exactly 200 years ago. Interestingly, that voyage was part of a scientific mission led by Phillip Parker King – son of Philip Gidley King, Australia’s third governor and the man who issued the Currency Proclamation of 1800! The Beagle later found fame due to its second voyage – a circumnavigation of the globe that played a fundamental role in the formulation of Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution by means of natural selection.
