Launched in 1820, and taking part in the coronation celebrations of King George IV, the first voyage of the Beagle was part of a scientific mission led by Phillip Parker King – the son of Philip Gidley King, Australia’s third governor and the man who issued the Currency Proclamation of 1800! The Beagle found fame due to its second voyage – a voyage that played a key role in the formulation of Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution.
An exquisite precious tribute to this iconic British vessel, each coin is crafted from sterling silver, with the outer plated in pure gold! Beautifully designed, the reverse bears a powerful portrayal of the Beagle at full sail, encircled by animals observed by Charles Darwin on the second voyage.
