Launched in 1820, and taking part in the coronation celebrations of King George IV, the first voyage of the Beagle was part of a scientific mission led by Phillip Parker King – the son of Philip Gidley King, Australia’s third governor and the man who issued the Currency Proclamation of 1800! The Beagle found fame due to its second voyage – a voyage that played a key role in the formulation of Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution.
