Formed in 1965, with Syd Barret as the lead singer and driving force, Pink Floyd was named after blues musicians Pink Anderson and Floyd Council. Originally a key part of the emerging British psychedelic scene, known for extended, experimental compositions and elaborate live shows, Pink Floyd evolved into one of the most important and defining elements of the progressive rock genre.
Led by Roger Waters after Syd Barret’s departure, with Dave Gilmour arguably just as important to the band’s success, Pink Floyd created some of the greatest albums ever produced. This included Wish You Were Here in 1975, Animals in 1977, The Wall in 1979 and, of course, The Dark Side of the Moon in 1973. The fourth best-selling album of all time, with more than 45 million copies sold, and spending an astonishing 996 weeks on the charts in the US, Dark Side of the Moon – and its iconic album cover – forms the inspiration for this Royal Mint tribute.
