Affordable, official and superbly presented, the Portraits of Queen Elizabeth II 2026 £5 Ian Rank-Broadley Cupro-Nickel Brilliant Uncirculated Coin celebrates a crucial chapter in British – and Australian – currency history.
A noted British artist and sculptor, Ian Rank-Broadley deliberately set out to create a more realistic portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, in contrast to the idealised portrait it was destined to replace, created by Raphael Maklouf. The Royal Mint states that, as coins were becoming smaller, Rank-Broadley also aimed to create a portrait that would “fill as much of the field as possible”, and used Benedetto Pistrucci’s 1817 coinage portrait of King George III as his inspiration. A much-admired work, Rank-Broadley’s effigy first appeared on Australian circulating coinage in 1999, and was employed for two decades.
Taking the fourth coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II to a new level, Rank-Broadley’s effigy has been superbly remastered by Royal Mint Chief Engraver Gordon Summers for this unique commemorative type. Uniting the Queen with her son & successor on an official British legal tender coin, Martin Jennings’ official portrait of King Charles III is found upon the obverse.
Set within an informative, illustrated Royal Mint pack exploring the story behind Rank-Broadley’s masterwork, this affordable release is a must-have for those with a passion for Australia’s currency history.
