The iconic Tudor Beasts
Built in the early 16th century, Hampton Court Palace was given to King Henry VIII by Cardinal Wolsey, who hoped the gift might save him from the executioner’s blade. After marrying Jane Seymour in 1536, Henry commissioned a new entrance to the palace, arrayed with statues of heraldic beasts to honour his new Queen. Including the White Lion of Mortimer, the Black Bull of Clarence and the Seymour Unicorn, the Tudor Beasts statues represent an inspired concept for a coin series.
The mighty Royal Dragon
Among the most impressive of the Tudor Beasts was the Royal Dragon – standing proudly on the Moat Bridge, poised to safeguard the gate of the palace. A symbol of courage and strength, the Royal Dragon represents Henry’s Welsh ancestry. The dragon was originally adopted as an emblem by Henry’s great-grandfather, Owen Tudor, establishing a lineage back to the King of Gwynedd in the 7th century. Henry’s father, King Henry VII, who founded the Tudor Dynasty, employed a red dragon as his emblem after victory at the Battle of Bosworth Field.
Beautifully designed, precisely struck
A unique tribute to this proud heraldic beast, the 2026 £5 Royal Dragon BU Coin bears a design created by acclaimed artist David Lawrence. Official legal tender, the broad 38.61mm diameter flan of this unique type also carries the official portrait of King Charles III by Martin Jennings. A fine presentation, each coin is set in an official Royal Mint pack exploring the history of the Royal Dragon, offering a fascinating glimpse into Tudor heraldry and royal tradition.
