Designed by Yuko Shimizu, and first appearing on a vinyl coin purse, Hello Kitty was created by the Japanese company Sanrio in 1974. In the decades since, Hello Kitty has become a global phenomenon. Moving beyond children’s merchandise, Hello Kitty has appeared in TV, video games, books, music, fashion, art, theme parks, and even aviation branding! A key symbol of ‘kawaii’ (cute) culture, she is one of the most successful fictional characters in the world.
Over the decades, Hello Kitty’s circle of friends has grown, and includes Keroppi, Pompompurin, My Melody, Cinnamoroll and Badtz-Maru. Celebrating their joyful and caring friendships – friendships underpinned by kindness, fun, and the beauty of being different while staying connected – this unique tribute is headlined by an eye-catching $1 coin. Struck by the Perth Mint, the 30.70mm flan carries a delightful portrayal of Hello Kitty and her friends – superbly depicted in full-colour!
