An official issue of the Royal Australian Mint, this Australian legal tender 50c coin was issued to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Indian Pacific Railway.
In February of 1970, the first Indian Pacific service left Sydney in New South Wales. When it arrived in Perth, Western Australia, it became the first direct train to cross the Australian continent, and one of the worldโs few truly transcontinental railways. The journey across the Australian continent is considered one of the worldโs great railway experiences.
An appropriate tribute a true Australian icon, the Royal Australian Mint issued this unique, one-year-only type to mark the 50th anniversary of the Indian Pacific. Bearing a detailed depiction of the train, the coin is also highlighted with blue and yellow, in homage to the distinctive livery of the Indian Pacific NR27 locomotive
Whilst always hotly pursued by railway buffs โ with trains being one of the worldโs strongest collector fields โ demand for this key type is largely driven by the fact that it was not issued for circulation. A must-have for a complete collection, this coin will never be found in your change!
