Official Australian legal tender, the 1986 Peace $1 was released to celebrate the United Nations 1986 International Year of Peace. The world’s largest intergovernmental organisation, formed following the end of WWII with the aim of preventing the outbreak of another devastating global conflict, the United Nations first promoted the idea of 1986 International Year of Peace at a conference in November of 1981.

Representing a significant landmark in Australian decimal currency history, as our very first $1 commemorative, the 1986 Peace $1 carries the official logo of the 1986 International Year of Peace on the reverse. A beautifully balanced motif, the design features two hands releasing a dove, encircled by a wreath reminiscent of the United Nations emblem. Struck by the Royal Australian Mint, the obverse is distinguished by the Raphael Maklouf portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.
