Australia’s fourth circulating full-colour coin, the 2015 Lest We Forget $2 pays homage to those who served in Australia’s Baptism of Fire in the First World War – the ill-fated 1915 Gallipoli Campaign.
At dawn on April the 25th, 1915, Australian forces – along with New Zealand, British and French troops – landed upon the beaches of Gallipoli in Turkey. The aim of the campaign was to capture Constantinople and open a Black Sea supply route to Russia, but as soon as the ANZAC forces landed, the magnitude of the operation became apparent.
Facing fierce opposition from the Turkish troops entrenched in the steep cliffs above, the ‘smashing victory’ the Allies anticipated did not eventuate, and the campaign drifted into stalemate. Before the evacuation of Gallipoli took place in December 1915 and January 1916, over 8,000 Australians were killed in action, died of wounds or succumbed to illness, from a total of 26,111 casualties.
To honour those who took part in Australia’s Baptism of Fire at Gallipoli, the Royal Australian Mint struck the 2015 Lest We Forget $2 coin. An official Australian legal tender issue, with a tiny mintage of just 1.46 million, this unique, one-year-only type was largely hoarded out of circulation. It is very unlikely you will find the coin in change today, and even if you did, it would not be in the premium grade, as here.
