Featuring a design based on an illustration from leading 19th century naturalist John Gould, we are delighted to unveil the second coin in the Mammals of Australia Silver Series – the 2027 $1 Dingo 1oz Silver Proof Coin!
Revered for The Birds of Australia, and dubbed the Father of Australian Ornithology, John Gould was also hugely influential in the documentation of Australia’s mammals. When Gould arrived in Australia in 1838, he felt as if he had been “transported to another planet”. Such was the exotic and, to his eyes, unprecedented nature of the fauna, he embarked upon a comprehensive survey of Australian mammals. This ultimately resulted in The Mammals of Australia – published in 13 parts across three volumes from 1845 to 1863. This epic work including 182 illustrations – including that upon which this design celebrating the dingo is based!
Struck to immaculate Proof quality from 1oz of 99.9% pure silver, this official legal tender coin captures a key piece of Australian history with the power of modern minting. Inspired by an illustration in Volume 3 of The Mammals of Australia, the 38.60mm flan is adorned with a vivid full-colour depiction of Australia’s iconic dingo – complete with a special ‘JG’ John Gould privymark!
The perfect partner for the first of the Mammals of Australia Series, celebrating the Red Kangaroo, the mintage of the 2027 $1 Dingo 1oz Silver Proof is a mere 750 coins – each complete with a numbered Certificate of Authenticity.
