A fascinating insight into the history of Great Britain, and the complex, often fraught relationship between England and Scotland, this historic presentation unites silver pennies of England’s King Edward I (1272-1307) and Scotland’s King Alexander III (1249-86).

Despite a history of conflict, England and Scotland enjoyed relatively harmonious co-existence during the period when Edward and Alexander were in power. Alexander, who was Edward’s brother-in-law by virtue of his marriage to the English king’s sister, Margaret, pursued a policy of peace with the southern kingdom, and an uneasy alliance was maintained.

Alexander’s death in 1286 created a crisis in succession, however, and Edward took advantage to reassert English control. Edward’s determination to subjugate the Scots led to the Scottish Wars of Independence beginning in the late 13th century, and intermittent warfare between the two powers for the next 300 years.

Representing the calm before the storm, the silver pennies of Edward I and Alexander III are offered in better-thanusually-seen Very Fine quality. A fine presentation, these genuine medieval precious metal artefacts are set within capsules, and beautifully presented within a timber case with a Certificate of Authenticity.
