Representing a key landmark in Australian currency history, we are delighted to present the very first Australian $1 coin date – the 1984 Mob of Kangaroos $1!
As a result of inflation, and the greater durability and cost-effectiveness of coinage, the Australian $1 banknote was consigned to the pages of history in the 1980s – replaced by a $1 coin. The first $1 was issued in May of 1984, and although the removal of the much-loved $1 note created some controversy, the new $1 coin quickly endeared itself to the Australian public.
In part, public acclaim for the new coin was due to the fact that it carried a magnificent ‘Mob of Kangaroos’ design created by Stuart Devlin – the numismatic master craftsman who designed all of Australia’s first decimal coinage. Apart from being the first to carry Stuart Devlin’s distinctively Australian reverse motif, the 1984 $1 is also notable as the only circulating Australian $1 coin to carry the original decimal portrait of Queen Elizabeth II – designed by Arnold Machin. Thus, it’s an utterly unique type!
A wonderful opportunity to enjoy two of the finest designs to grace Australian coinage, we have the 1984 Mob of Roos $1 available struck to Specimen quality! Struck to a standard far superior to that used to manufacture the coins you find in your pocket, the Royal Australian Mint issued a limited number of Specimen 1984 Mob of Roos $1 to celebrate the changeover of the denomination from note to coin.
We have a small number of these beautiful coins available – each presented in the original, official Royal Australian Mint pack of issue.
