Dated between 19,000 and 23,000 years ago, and discovered in the Mungo National Park in the Willandra Lakes region in 2003, the Mungo Footprints are the oldest preserved human footprints ever found in Australia. In addition, they are the largest set of fossilised Ice Age human footprints in the world! The footprints, numbering approximately 500 in total, were created by people walking across damp clay, which was then baked rock hard by the sun. The Royal Australian Mint has captured that effect beautifully upon the reverse of this official commemorative coin!
