About the Green Sea Turtle…

Named after the greenish layer of flesh found beneath its shell, but notable for its varying colours that change over time, the Green Sea Turtle is a large sea turtle of the family Cheloniidae. Indeed, it is the largest species of hard-shelled turtle in the world! Found in tropical and subtropical seas around the globe, with distinct populations in the Atlantic and eastern Pacific, this noble creature was officially listed as an endangered species by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature in 1982.

Living to up to 90 years of age in the wild, the Green Sea Turtle may grow up to 1.5m in length, and although most range in weight from 68kg to 190kg, specimens weighing over 300kg have been found. In the past, little was known about the Green Sea Turtle and, although knowledge has thankfully increased, this ignorance – aligned with negligent and exploitative human behaviour – has contributed substantially to the significant reduction in the number of the species living in the wild.

Although large sharks target adult members of the species, with juveniles hunted by crabs, marine mammals and birds, the endangered status of the Green Sea Turtle is largely attributable to humans. The skin of the Green Sea Turtle was once used to make handbags, particularly in Hawaii, whilst the turtle was considered a culinary delicacy in Ancient China.

In more modern times, the Green Sea Turtle was the basis of turtle soup, popular in America in the 19th century, with the species also harvested for food in the Indonesian archipelago. People still hunt the Green Sea Turtle and its eggs for food and, with pollution, poor fishing practices and real estate development also having a significant impact, human action has left many turtle populations in a vulnerable state.

Global initiatives have halted the unrestricted exploitation of the Green Sea Turtle, but more needs to be done. Unique, exclusive and eye-catching, the Green Sea Turtle 2025 $5 Colour 2oz Silver Proof Coin forms a fine way to highlight the plight of this endangered species.
