With Edward VIII abdicating due to a constitutional crisis revolving around his determination to marry American divorcee Wallis Simpson, very few coins were issued during his brief reign. In part, this was due to a raging debate over the official portrait to be used for coins of Great Britain and its empire. Edward refused to follow tradition and have a ‘right facing portrait’, as he felt that the left side was his best. Edward abdicated before the issue could be resolved, and no portrait coins were ever issued for circulation anywhere in the world.
The New Guinea Edward VIII 1936 Penny!
Some British territories released coins with no portrait, however, meaning that official Edward VIII currency was indeed issued during his reign – including New Guinea’s 1936 Penny! New Guinea was a Mandated Territory at that time, administrated by Australia, and the 1936 Penny was struck at the Melbourne branch of the Royal Mint. Although the mintage was closed at just 360,000, this unique, fascinating coin is incredibly affordable – even in pristine quality.
