Although the subject had been raised when New Zealand’s first national coinage was issued, in 1933, the concept of converting to decimal currency was a low priority for the government – in part due to the advent of WWII. By the 1950s, however, public support for the idea was clearly on the rise, and in 1959, a committee reported on the benefits of the changeover. In 1963, it was announced that the country would indeed embrace decimalisation, and an ‘open’ design competition was announced.
In a saga too lengthy to detail here, that competition – and, indeed, the entire design process – turned out to be extremely controversial. At various moments on the journey to determine what New Zealand’s new coinage would look like, the Government, the public, the artistic/design community and the Royal Mint expressed either outrage, dissatisfaction, disillusionment or all three! Ultimately, James Berry’s designs were chosen to grace the circulating coins (1c to 50c), with the crown-sized $1 commemorative offered here the work of William Gardener.
New Zealand’s decimal design process may have sparked heated debate, but there’s no argument about the Decimal Currency Introduction 1967 $1 – it is a superb piece of numismatic art. Uniting New Zealand’s shield with St Edward’s Crown, draped in the nation’s iconic ferns, Gardner’s beautifully balanced, richly symbolic motif is perfectly accommodated by the broad, crown-sized 38.61mm flan. The design was employed again in subsequent years, but the 1967 issue is unique, bearing, as it does, an edge inscription reading ‘DECIMAL CURRENCY INTRODUCED JULY 10 1967’.
