While today there are numerous types of Advent calendars and sometimes the most unusual things are hidden behind the doors in addition to sweets, the custom had a much more minimalist character at its origin. The earliest forms are known from the 19th century and differ depending on the region and denominational orientation. For example, at that time children were only allowed to wipe one of 24 chalk strokes from the wall each day, or to place a new straw in a manger. By contrast, this new numismatic Advent calendar is a lot more exciting. It includes 24 different coins from countries all over the world, from Egypt to Greece to Vanuatu.
