A world-famous archaeological site in Jordan, Petra was the capital city of the Nabataean Kingdom. Settled by the Nabataeans circa 4th century BC, Petra became an important trading centre, with a population of around 30,000 at its peak. It is most famous for its rock-cut architecture, with virtually every building carved out of rose-red sandstone – including the 40-metre-high Al-Khazneh – ‘the Treasury’. Built as a mausoleum during the reign of Aretas IV Philopatris (9BC-40AD), Al-Khazneh is often considered the symbol of Petra.
