1953 – the first coins of Queen Elizabeth II

Representing a major milestone in our currency history, we are delighted to present the Australia 1953 6-Coin Set – the very first Australian coins of the record-breaking reign of Queen Elizabeth II!

Born in April 1926, Elizabeth II was thrust upon the throne at the tender age of 25, following the untimely death of her father, King George VI. Guiding Great Britain and the Commonwealth from post-WWII reconstruction to the new Millennium and beyond – from an era of ration tickets to an era of 3D printing – she ruled for more than 70 years, becoming the longest-reigning monarch in British history. Defined by humility, loyalty, dignity, strength in adversity, and an unwavering commitment to her people, she was a beacon of stability in a world of seemingly ceaseless change.

A fine memento of her extraordinary reign, and the perfect way to celebrate a birthday or an anniversary, the 1953 Year Set comprises six coins. Bearing the first coinage portrait of the queen, designed by Mary Gillick, the six coins include the copper halfpenny and penny, united with the silver threepence, sixpence, shilling and florin. All six coins are notable as the first of 2-year-only types. The obverse inscription did not include ‘F:D’ (Defender of the Faith) in 1953 and 1954 – a controversial omission that caused such an uproar that it was returned to the legend of the standard Australian coin types in 1955!

An excellent presentation, the Australia Elizabeth II 1953 Fine-Very Fine 6-Coin Set is housed within an eye-catching, illustrated pack, featuring extensive information on the queen, the coins, and the era.
