The first Australian coins of Queen Elizabeth II, and the last Australian coins of the predecimal era, we are delighted to present the Elizabeth II 1953-64 Mary Gillick Portrait Extremely Fine-Uncirculated 6-Coin Set!
In 1953, the year that she was crowned, the first Australian coinage of Queen Elizabeth II was unveiled. That coinage included the halfpenny, penny, threepence, sixpence, shilling & florin. As fate would have it, these would be the final coin types of Australia’s first national currency system. Distinguished by a distinctively Australian reverse design, each coin carried the obverse portrait by Mary Gillick.
Notable for portraying an uncrowned Queen, Gillick’s design was chosen from designs submitted by an array of artists to a competition conducted by the Royal Mint Advisory Committee. A youthful and optimistic portrait, symbolising a new Elizabethan era and a fresh start following WWII, Gillick’s effigy was employed from 1953 until 1964 when it made way for Australia’s first decimal portrait.
A surprisingly affordable memento of a key chapter in the history of Australian currency, this impressive set includes an example of all six Elizabeth II predecimal denominations from the halfpenny to the florin. In premium condition, the six coins grade from Extremely Fine to Uncirculated – mints & dates of our choice
Beautifully presented within an all-new, informative, illustrated pack, the Elizabeth II 1953-64 Mary Gillick Portrait 6-Coin Set represents sensational value at this price. Click add to cart now!
